How To Clean Tinted Car Windows

Tinting your car windows has many advantages. From increased privacy to protecting the interior from UV damage (plus they look super-cool), window tinting is a great investment. So it makes sense that you want to know how best to clean them.

Window Tinting Cleaning Tips: All you need to know

·      The dos

·      The don’ts

·      All about cleaning products

The dos

The most important thing when it comes to cleaning tinted windows is preparation. Having the right products and the correct tools in place means you’ll be able to get the windows sparkling clean without causing any damage.

With that in mind, the most important must-dos are as follows:

  • Do choose your cleaning products with care (more on that in a moment)
  • Do use several different microfiber cloths (ones for cleaning and ones for buffing)
  • Do use different cloths for the inside and outside of the windows
  • Do wash the windows last, after cleaning all the other areas of the car
  • Do park the car in the shade to prevent the windows drying too quickly and leaving streaks before you can rinse any cleaning products off
  • Do consider cleaning with just water, rather than using a window cleaning product

The don’ts

Because window tint is a film that’s added to the window it’s possible to cause damage to it through over-exuberant cleaning. Be sure not to:

  • Use abrasive cloths or materials, such as newspaper, scourers, or paper towels
  • Use a blade or anything sharp to try and squeeze any air bubbles out from under the film. This risks cutting the film itself. Should any bubbles appear you can, if you choose, use a credit card wrapped in a microfiber cloth to gently push them to the edge and allow the air to escape. The best way to prevent this happening is to ensure that window tinting is carried out by an experienced technician and is of suitably high quality.

All about cleaning products

Any Google search will bring up multiple ways you can mix your own product for cleaning tinted windows. While this might seem a good idea to save a few dollars, consider this… You’ve spent out good money to pimp your ride with tints, so why on earth would you risk damaging them with a poorly-made home cleaning solution?

As mentioned earlier, you can get your windows sparkling clean simply by using water and some elbow grease. However, if you do want to use a cleaning product (or your windows are truly dirty) you can use one of the many specialist tinted window cleaning solutions on the market. Just be sure to use ammonia-free products, as ammonia can cause the tint to become brittle and make it fade.

Top tip… If the product is blue, it’s likely to contain ammonia—so best avoided.

Worried About Window Tinting & Cleanliness? Don’t be—just follow this how-to guide

·      It’s as easy as 1,2,3…

It’s as easy as 1,2,3…

Ready to clean your tints? Then let’s get started…

  • #1: Mist the inside of the window: With warm water from a spray mist bottle
  • #2: Wipe the window with a microfiber cloth: Wipe vertically first, then horizontally to ensure all debris is removed
  • #3: Check for streaks: If present, repeat steps 1 & 2
  • #4: Roll the window down an inch: Wipe the top edge of the window

Repeat on the outside of the window (using different or well-rinsed cloths).

It’s as simple as that! Repeat on all of the windows and voila! You’re done… If you do want to use a cleaning product, replace the spray water with that—the results will be the same.
