The Future of Ceramic Coating

When it comes to paintwork protection, ceramic coating is one of the best things to have come out of recent technological advances.

But what does this mean for now and in the future?

Let’s look at what might be the art of the possible…

The Future of Ceramic Coating: today, tomorrow, and beyond

  • Ceramic coating today
  • What can we expect for the future of ceramic coating?

Ceramic coating today

Ceramic coating uses what’s known as nanotechnology. In layman’s terms, this means that the protective powers of the coating are infused with microscopic particles of ultra-hard ceramic.

While they’re invisible to the naked eye, what they do is this:

  • They provide an incredible robust protection against physical damage, such as stone chips and twig/branch scratches.
  • They refract light, making the surface gleam. This isn’t some nice-to-have, just-waxed shine—this takes paintwork brilliance to a whole new level…!
  • As well as the shine, these particles bounce off UV rays, directing them away from the paintwork and dramatically reducing paint fade.

In addition to this, the other properties of a ceramic coating are:

  • It’s incredibly hydrophobic. This means that water beads and runs away. When this happens, it collects most of the dirt, dust, and other contaminants on the paintwork, meaning the car remains cleaner for longer.
  • It provides a robust barrier against chemical attack, such as salt, acid rain, bird dropping, and tree sap. While it’s not infallible, as long as you remove these as soon as possible, then you won’t see any evidence that they were ever there.

What can we expect for the future of ceramic coating?

So that all sounds pretty good, we think you’ll agree. But how will this be improved in the future?

We think that, over the coming years and decades, you might find some or all of the following becoming reality.

  • Longevity: Today’s top ceramic coatings last for a minimum of 4 years—often a lot longer with good care. Expect this lifespan to increase as time goes by.
  • Toughness: Today’s coatings can withstand some pretty intense knocks. However, it’s likely that the property will become even more enhanced as nanotech also advances.
  • Affordability: While ceramic coating is definitely affordable, no one can accuse the best of being cheap. Again, as the technology advances, we can expect the price to come down somewhat.

There is a proviso to the last point, and that’s regarding the expertise of the installation. No matter how inexpensive the product becomes, there’s no getting away from the intense prep needed for a quality ceramic coating.

Not only does the vehicle need to be cleaned to within an inch of its life, but it needs to be done in a semi-sterile, temperature-controllers environment.

With the best will in the world, the best ceramic coating installations take a minimum of 48 hours. This includes cleaning, paintwork correction, application, and time for the coating to cure.

Therefore, this should all be taken into account when weighing up the costs of having a ceramic coating installed on your pride and joy.
