Ceramic Coating vs PPF: Which Is Better for Your Tesla in Florida?
There’s a lot of chatter about whether PPF or ceramic coating is the better option for your Tesla (and Cybertrucks in particular). But what many people don’t realize is that while they’re both paint protection products, each plays a completely different role.
OK, so to dig down into the ceramic coating vs. PPF debate (Tesla or any other high-end car), we need to understand a little more about the three elements that are always conspiring to wreck your car’s gleaming façade. These are:
- The climate: So, for Florida, we’re looking at heat, humidity, salt from the ocean, and the (not-so) occasional big storm rolling through.
- Paint damage from physical objects: Scratches, scrapes, dints, and dings caused by things like stone chips, twigs, hedges, misjudging that tight turn in the parking lot, yadda, yadda, yadda.
- Paint damage from other sources: Anything else that degrades the paint, like bird droppings, acid rain, UV rays, etc.
There’s nothing you can do to stop the constant attacks on your Tesla’s paintwork (or bare metal, if you’re rocking a Cybertruck). Adding a physical product—like ceramic coating or PPF—is the only way you can halt the silent demise of your ride’s good looks.
So! Let’s talk about what PPF can do to stop the rot…
PPF adds an invisible physical layer over the paintwork. It’s slightly pliable, cushioning and repelling impacts from stone chips and other damage. Good quality PPF is self-healing, meaning that if minor damage occurs, applying a little heat will see it magically re-form back to its original smooth surface (Slightly T-1000-esque, for any Terminator fans out there. But we digress…).
The addition of PPF will effectively shield the paintwork from:
- Stone chips.
- Small scratches.
- Minor impacts.
- UV rays.
Ceramic coating, on the other hand, is all about adding a chemical defense. It uses advanced technology to bond with the paintwork, creating a permanent upper layer on the paintwork. It’s rock hard, invisible, and provides an impenetrable barrier that stops UV rays from passing through. It also prevents other chemical attacks from reaching the paintwork, like acid rain, tree sap, and bird droppings.
Another highlight of ceramic coating is how hydrophobic it is—think of it as wax on steroids! Water beads and rolls instantly away, taking any dirt and grime with it. The result is a car that’s far easier to keep clean (although don’t believe the hype that says you don’t need to wash a ceramic-coated car. You do, just less often, and it’s a much less intensive job).
Lastly, a ceramic coating adds that “brand new car sheen” that all cars roll off the production line with. But it lasts indefinitely, thanks to the microscopic pieces of ceramic that are infused into the coating. It intensifies the gleam (or depth of matte, if that’s your ride’s vibe) in a way that no other product can do.
But… And this is really important. Neither PPF nor ceramic coating can provide the optimal protection alone. This is why a combination of the two is the only option for the ultimate Tesla paint protection in Florida, or wherever else in the US you might live.
The PPF provides the required shield from physical damage, and the ceramic coating adds an additional armored layer against chemical attack—plus it enhances the car’s looks and makes it easier to maintain.
If you drive a Tesla in Florida, then adding some kind of paint protection is really important. The Sunshine State climate presents multiple paintwork challenges, and never is this so true as for a Tesla. If you’re only planning on going for a single product, then you might want to consider PPF over ceramic.
